Moving to a new country can be overwhelming
Understanding the Slovak Healthcare System
Public Healthcare System
Slovakia operates a universal healthcare model, meaning that every legally insured resident has access to basic medical services.
Key Features:
- Funded through mandatory health insurance contributions
- Managed by licensed health insurance companies
- Covers most essential healthcare services
- Hospitals and clinics operate under both public and private ownership
Public healthcare typically includes:
- General practitioner (GP) visits
- Specialist consultations (with referral)
- Hospital treatment
- Emergency care
- Preventive care (vaccinations, screenings)
- Maternity services
- Basic dental care (limited coverage)
While services are generally affordable under public insurance, waiting times for specialists can sometimes be longer in public facilities.
Health Insurance Requirement
Health insurance is compulsory for:
- Employees working in Slovakia
- Self-employed individuals (živnostnÃci)
- Students residing long-term
- Family members of insured workers
- Permanent and temporary residence holders
If you are employed, your employer automatically registers and pays your insurance contributions (deducted from your salary).
If you are self-employed, you must:
- Register with a health insurance company
- Pay monthly contributions yourself
Without valid insurance, you may be required to pay full medical costs.
Health Insurance Providers
There are three main public health insurance providers in Slovakia:
- Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa (VšZP)
- Dôvera zdravotná poisťovňa
- Union zdravotná poisťovňa
All three provide similar basic coverage under Slovak law. However, they may differ in:
- Customer service quality
- English language support
- Additional benefits (discounts, online services)
- Digital / mobile app functionality
You are allowed to switch insurance providers once per year under certain conditions.
How Medical Care Works
Step 1: Register with a General Practitioner (GP)
Your GP (Obvodný lekár) is your first point of contact for most medical issues.
You must register with a GP located near your place of residence.
Step 2: Referral to a Specialist
If necessary, your GP will issue a referral to a specialist
(for example: cardiologist, dermatologist, orthopedist, etc.).
Step 3: Hospital Care
In case of serious illness, injury, or required surgery,
you may be admitted to a hospital. The majority of hospital costs
are covered by public health insurance.
Step 4: Prescription Medication
After consultation, doctors may prescribe medication.
Health insurance typically covers part of the cost,
and you pay a small co-payment at the pharmacy.
3. Family & Dependents

Children under 18
In certain cases, dependent parents
